The term 'Social Advertising' has put an end to a lot of confusions, and Seth's definition made it concisely understandable. As far as I'm concerned it's the most convenient way to call it without arousing unwanted misconceptions.

First, everyone within a community should have the ability to promote themselves. Second, members of the community should be able to directly communicate with those advertising. Third, administrator of a community should only serve as facilitator and moderator for members of the community. If we take these three points in consideration, Social Advertising should be define as a marketing method used in social networking communities where everyone can advertise their products or services with an open exchange between members.

I've never heard of the phrase social advertising, but that's all social media is. Although there is a right and wrong way to go about it. Blatant advertising in a social media setting can get you in trouble which is something you don't want, especially if you are trying to brand. Things have to be done elegantly by passing value to your target market.

The future of “social” advertising and the agencies that are starting to pop up in order to help developers manage it is an intriguing topic for me. socialmedia.com is an interesting site. Also interesting is that the agency is based in silicon valley, colorado and india.
