I do agree, social media has been in the center of attention for all business owners, it's a thing that we shouldn't miss if we wanted our company to grow.

Very strong points you raised. The power of social media is continuously stretching far and wide, even going into deeper lengths like dating and wedding networks that's why its elements should remain flawless to assure its participants a satisfactory experience.

Hi Katie,

Good points, and maybe it is that I need to expand upon what I am considering "content". Here is some rambling, pre-coffee thoughts.

To me, content has several definitions and I tend to think of content in a broader artifact/object/information sense, not as traditional "media content" - if that makes sense. So that when designing a social media project you are going to have content - information, POV, discussions, etc that are going to be part of the project.

And you're right, organic conversation is not something you can control. But you can control how you approach the conversation. We do have control on how we present ourselves. So, to me there is a small control factor in what we can do. I can walk into a dinner party and I can approach people and conversations and be a raving lunatic or a calm, shy wall flower. Each approach is going to have an effect on the conversation, sentiment.

When creating a social media project, we do have intent on what we want to do. There is something we want to achieve. That could be creating a better venue for feedback or actively approaching consumers in there conversation environments. In doing so, we will have information, venue, that is "content", (information/artifact) something to share, discuss, have place.

I totally agree with you that in that we need to figure out the the nature/context of conversations and what people need/want. That is why I talked about "designing" social media projects. By incorporating design principles into a social media project I think it helps identify and solve the problem (problem being what we would like to achieve).

Hmmm...my thoughts are kind of all over the place...maybe this would be better if it had its own blog post :)

You keep talking about "your content" as if social media is some sort of web site or magazine, when in fact its a conversation that is happening in your marketplace. I worry that you are assuming you can contreol that conversation, when you most certainly cannot. That's why you need to understand the nature and content of that conversation first before you can figure out what people are actually doing with that conversation and what you want to do about it

Flattered, of course! But now you have to take the next, more difficult step...what's the metric that rolls all of this together? Let me know...
